Georgia O’Keeffe’s Summer Home
Welcome to the summer home of famous painter Georgia O’Keeffe and her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, a photographer. This summer home was O’Keeffe’s beloved sanctuary that soothed her soul and inspired some of her finest paintings. From 1918-1934, she spent part of every year, mostly extended summers, at the Stieglitz’s Lake George family estate. During this time, she based many of her groundbreaking works and paintings on the area around the Lake George estate, several of which are displayed in The Quarters Mansion as well as old pictures of the building in the 1920s.
Georgia O'Keeffe's relationship with Oaklawn (now known as The Quarters at Lake George) was an essential part of her life and artistic journey. In the summer of 1918, O'Keeffe began spending time at Oaklawn (The Quarters), which offered her a peaceful retreat surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Adirondacks.
During her stay, O'Keeffe was drawn to the rich colors, unique shapes, and shifting light of the environment. The natural surroundings, including the mountains and the water, provided a serene backdrop that allowed her to explore her artistic voice. This period helped her refine her style, moving toward the bold forms and vibrant hues that would later define her work.
Living in Lake George also connected O'Keeffe with other artists, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. The peaceful atmosphere allowed her to focus on her painting, resulting in a body of work that reflects the essence of the region. Although she eventually moved on to New Mexico, the experiences and inspirations she gained in Lake George remained influential throughout her career.
O'Keeffe's time in Lake George is a testament to the power of nature in shaping an artist’s vision, and her legacy continues to resonate in the beauty of the landscape that inspired her.
